Norton smartphone suite i salg neste uke

Hentet fra PC World, skrevet for Washington Post.

Norton Mobile Security for Smartphones–a product designed to protect devices running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS–will be available Next week.

Next week, Symantec Corp. will broaden its mobile security product line by shipping new products designed for Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile devices.

The software will come in two versions: a consumer product called Norton Mobile Security for Smartphones and Symantec Mobile Security 5.0, designed for enterprise users. Both versions will be available May 29, a company spokesman said Monday.

Symantec already sells a suite for phones based on the Symbian operating system, as well as antivirus software for Windows Mobile but these new products will support a much broader range of security features, Symantec said.

The new Windows Mobile software will include antivirus, antispam, firewall and data encryption capabilities, to keep data secure, even if the smartphone is lost. Symantec will also sell an optional VPN (virtual private network) component for users who want to securely connect with their corporate servers.

The enterprise software will have advanced IT administration and auditing features. For example, administrators could wipe data off the phones remotely, or check an audit log to see everything that was done with the device after it was lost. Administrators will also be able to lock down certain mobile phone features, making them unavailable to users.

The vast majority of malicious software today is targeted at PCs, not smartphones, but security vendors believe that a large number of mobile phone users, coupled with the growing complexity of devices, may soon turn these devices into a more attractive target for hackers.

Data losses now regularly make front-page news in the U.S., and enterprises are starting to take note of the potential risks associated with mobile devices.

“More and more people have identified a need for it, because they’re deploying mission critical enterprise applications on these handsets,” said Bob Egan, chief analyst with the Tower Group Inc. based in Needham, Massachusetts.

With banks such as Bank of America Corp., Wachovia Corp., and Citigroup Inc. all rolling out support for mobile banking, online criminals now have a financial incentive to target smartphone users, he added.

Egan estimates that Windows Mobile devices make up about 3 percent of the U.S. mobile phone market.

Norton Mobile Security for Smartphones will cost US$49.95. Symantec Mobile Security 5.0 will be priced at $79.95. Symantec will ship a similar 5.0 update to Symbian smartphone software in about six months, a company spokesman said.

Se lanseringsdokument her.

Windows Mobile solgte godt i 2. kvartal!

Hentet fra Information Week.
InformationWeek

Windows Mobile licensees accounted for nearly 3.2 million shipments of personal digital devices in the first quarter.

Shipments of handheld computers running Windows Mobile soared 64% in the first quarter, propelling worldwide shipments overall to 5.1 million units, a 39.7% increase over the same period a year ago, a market researcher says.

Windows Mobile licensees accounted for nearly 3.2 million shipments of personal digital devices in the first quarter, or more than 60% of total shipments, Gartner said.

“This strong growth was surprising because Windows Mobile 6 will launch in the second quarter, accompanied by the launch of many new and improved models,” Gartner analyst Todd Kort said in a statement. “Normally, consumers and businesses have constrained their purchases when upgrades are imminent.”

Research In Motion continued to lead the PDA market, but its product mix has shifted toward a different, but more lucrative, product category, smartphones. As a result, the BlackBerry Pearl accounted for 55% of RIM shipments in the first quarter. In the PDA market, RIM shipments were essentially flat, but Gartner predicts shipments would grow through the remainder of the year as the new 88xx and 83xx models replace the 87xx.

Mio Technology, the leading Microsoft licensee, shipped nearly 568,000 PDAs in the quarter, a 162.1% increase from a year ago. All the shipments were equipped with global positioning systems, which are popular in Europe and other regions.

The top five PDA vendors, according to market share, were RIM, 18.1%; Mio, 11.1%; Samsung, 8.8%; Sharp, 8.5%; and Nokia, 6.2%. Total shipments for all vendors in the quarter topped 5.1 million units, compared with 3.7 million a year ago.

Gartner defines a PDA as a data-centric handheld computer that weighs less than a pound and is primarily designed for use with both hands. The data-first devices may offer voice as a secondary capability.

Men allikevel, to spennende telefoner.

Ta en titt og sammelign selv.
